SUMMARY:Panel: Identifying and enacting generous scholarly practice
DESCRIPTION:9:00pm GMT \nHow can we identify\, embody and model generous scholarship and scholarly practices at every career level? While some of us use individual strategies\, including for example feminist citation strategies and ethics of care\, this panel seeks to engage the wider AERI community in discussion about how to evolve as a generous research community. In this panel\, we explore together how we can follow through on our shared commitment to working within the academy’s ethically compromised spaces in ways that do not just imbricate ourselves into the hierarchies of power\, but work to subvert\, undermine\, open doors\, and make different ways of working and doing possible. \nCurrent events and attitudes\, including the global Covid-19 pandemic that led to the cancellation of an in-person AERI 2020\, the pandemic’s disproportionate harms on Black\, Brown and Indigenous peoples that have shown in stark relief systemic structures of oppression\, and the protests for Black liberation and lives across the United States after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police\, make the topic of generosity in research and scholarship still more urgent. What kinds of generosity are required within research and scholarly communities to acknowledge the effects of white supremacy\, patriarchy\, xenophobia\, and other oppressive forces and to support the BIPOC\, LGBTQIA2S+\, and women scholars who are disproportionately affected? \nWorking with the belief that generosity will contribute to fostering an inclusive\, just\, supportive\, generative and creative research community\, this panel aims to 1) identify the characteristics of generous scholarly and research practice; and 2) develop shared strategies for enacting it. \nPanel plan: \n\nFacilitators will briefly introduce themselves and their motivations for holding the panel; through personal stories/examples\, each facilitator will briefly sketch their ideas about generosity and what it means to them.\nSmall group brainstorming sessions in breakout groups to discuss the following types of questions: What does generosity look like? Where is it needed? What does it feel like? Why is it important?\nSharing small group discussions with the larger panel group.\nSmall group strategizing sessions in breakout groups to discuss how generous scholarly practices can be enacted and to identify strategies we can start employing immediately and others that need more resources.\nSharing small group strategizing with the larger group and identifying potential resources\, collaborators\, future actions\, etc.\n\nNotes will be taken in a google doc that can be shared with all session participants as well as publicly. DESCRIPTION:12:00am – 2:00am GMT \nSince the creation of the Records Continuum Model (RCM) in the 1990s\, numerous scholars have used it to ground their own ideas and research\, and as a basis for further visualisation and articulation of records continuum thinking. This has led most recently to the exploration of continuum models and modelling for radical and participatory recordkeeping. \nAs Rolan (2017) describes: \n “ … any treatment of participatory engagement with records that attempts to solve problems of severe disenfranchisement requires a continuum approach—the Records Continuum Model to deal with the complexity of records and a Participatory Recordkeeping Continuum Model to understand the complexity of participatory agency.”  \nAnd as Jarvie\, Rolan & Soyka (2017) noted in their introduction to a special issue of Archives & Manuscripts on radical recordkeeping the need for \n“… disruption of traditional recordkeeping paradigms in revolutionary or profound ways using different approaches that inform practice\, scholarship and teaching.” \nIn this workshop we aim to explore the use of continuum modelling in participatory and radical recordkeeping contexts. SUMMARY:Workshop: Teaching the Continuum in different cultural\, linguistic and professional contexts
DESCRIPTION:12:00am – 2:00am GMT \nThe workshop will be an opportunity to share experience and ideas on how we can teach the Continuum in different contexts and develop culturally appropriate examples. It will discuss the following questions: \n\nWhat are the key concepts that we want to communicate?\nHow can we teach the Continuum to international students?\nHow can the Continuum be taught in other cultural\, linguistic and professional contexts?\n\nShort scenarios will be used for small group discussions on how we can teach/explain the Continuum in different contexts and will provide opportunities for participants to contribute their experience of addressing barriers\, developing adaptations\, translations\, examples\, tips\, etc. \nBackground\nWhen explaining Continuum concepts to an international audience\, basic concepts\, including the concepts of record\, recordkeeping and archives\, which have a different meaning in other languages\, need to be explained first. Many languages do not have a word for record. This has for consequence that the English concept of records gets translated differently depending on the context. In some other languages\, the words used by archivists are different from the words used by ordinary people\, which can also be confusing. To further complicate the issue\, the way the words records and recordkeeping are used in Australia to encompass both records and archives\, and records management and archives management are different from the ways they are used in the rest of the English-speaking world. This needs to be clarified and examples discussed with the target audience before attempting to explain the Records Continuum Model. DESCRIPTION:3:00 pm – 4:30 pm GMT \nPanel participants include: \nJeannette Bastian (USA) is a Professor Emerita at Simmons University\, Boston where she directed their Archives Management program. She is the co-editor with Andrew Flinn of Community Archives\, Community Spaces; Heritage\, Memory\, Identity (Facet\, London 2020) \nAndrew Flinn (panel organiser\, UK) is a Reader in Archival Studies and Oral History at University College London and the vice-chair of the UK and Ireland Community Archives and Heritage Group. Along with Jeannette Bastian he is the co-editor of the recent Facet publication (London\, 2020) Community Archives Community Spaces: Heritage\, memory and identity which include contributions from the UK\, North America\, Australia\, Thailand\, Aotearoa New Zealand\, and Croatia and relating to a variety of community-led archives and communities / peoples. \nHannah Ishmael (UK) recently completed her PhD on The Development of Black-led Archives in London at University College London and is the archivist at the Black Cultural Archives in London. \nLi Mengqiu (China) is a Phd student at Renmin University of China in the School of Information Resource Management. Research area: Community archives\, Archives governance. \nLuisa Metelo Seixas (Brasília\, 1986) is a Contemporary History PhD candidate at NOVA University of Lisbon (Institute of Contemporary History). Her present research (with the scientific supervision of Professor Fernanda Rollo\, Maria Inês Queiroz and Professor Luis Baptista) focuses on History with and for Communities\, more specifically on Portuguese contemporary projects and initiatives on the safeguarding of documentation and materials with the participation and collaboration of communities and the public. This encompasses grassroots and independent action\, but also the importance of the phenomenon of community inventories and collections in museums and archives in the Portuguese Landscape. Since 2015 she collaborates on the management and development of the Memory for All Programme (www.memoriaparatodos.pt)\, fostering the identification\, organisation and digital preservation of individual and community archival materials and heritage in Portugal. \nMagdalena Wiśniewska-Drewniak (panel organiser\, Poland) is an Academic teacher and researcher from Poland\, since 2018 employed at the Faculty of History\, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Between 2016 and 2019 she was a PI in a research project “Community archives in Poland – multiple case study”\, which was concluded with publication of her first book. Her research interests\, apart from community archives\, are archival research methodology and new trends in archival science. SUMMARY:Sovereignty: Records and the Right to Rule
DESCRIPTION:6:00pm – 8:00pm GMT \nWalking around Marlborough House in London\, a former royal palace and now the seat of the Commonwealth Secretariat\, you can pick up wifi networks called ‘Imperium I\, ‘Imperium II’\, etc. Imperium refers to an ancient Roman legal concept concerning the right to rule\, which\, used in this location\, seems both ominous and like an inappropriate joke. The right to rule\, the sovereignty of nations and persons\, has preoccupied political thought for centuries and\, though under-recognised as such\, it is a recurrent theme in archival discourse. Here\, the concept is at work as ‘authoritative records’\, ‘custody’\, ‘stewardship’\, ‘chain of preservation’\, ‘rights in records’\, etc. This panel will seek to surface ‘sovereignty’ as an archival concept approaching its double in political theory in significance and complexity. Panellists will consider archival sovereignty from Indigenous\, anticolonial\, postcolonial and digital perspectives\, presenting studies of Indigenous sovereignty over records in settler colonial states\, national sovereignty in the removal of records\, personal sovereignty over ones’ digital remains\, and data sovereignty for the stateless. SUMMARY:“Come together\, right now\, over me”: Towards a network of ARM PhD students in the UK and Ireland
DESCRIPTION:1:00pm – 2:00pm GMT \nAn informal meet-up aiming to bring together current ARM PhD students to discuss the development of a future cross-institutional network for those undertaking research based in the UK and Ireland. The idea for the Network is to share research and foster collegiality for the benefit of what are usually small cohorts of doctoral candidates in this field. What this network may look like in both the current situation and when we begin to move back towards normality is very much open for discussion and would greatly benefit from us uniting as a physically disparate community to shape it together\, to ensure that it meets the needs of and supports as wide a range of PhD students as possible.
